Ingredients

  • 1 (24 count) package Hawaiian sweet rolls
  • 1.5 lbs thinly sliced deli roast beef
  • 12 slices provolone cheese
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder (optional)
  • For the Au Jus:
  • 4 cups beef broth (low sodium preferred)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Carefully slice the entire block of Hawaiian rolls horizontally through the middle, keeping the top and bottom connected. Place the bottom halves in the prepared baking dish.
  3. Evenly layer the thinly sliced roast beef over the bottom rolls.
  4. Arrange the provolone cheese slices over the roast beef.
  5. Gently place the top halves of the rolls over the cheese layer.
  6. In a small bowl, whisk together the melted butter, Dijon mustard, 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce, 1 tsp garlic powder, and the optional onion powder until well combined.
  7. Pour and spread the butter mixture evenly over the top of the rolls.
  8. Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 20 minutes.
  9. While the squares are baking, prepare the au jus: In a medium saucepan, combine the beef broth, 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce, 1 tsp garlic powder, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer over medium heat and cook for 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld. Keep warm until serving.
  10. After 20 minutes, remove the foil from the baking dish and bake for another 5-10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the tops are lightly golden brown.
  11. Remove from oven and let sit for a few minutes. Cut the squares along the roll seams and serve warm with individual ramekins of the warm au jus for dipping.
  12. Enjoy your easy and delicious French Dip Squares!
